Retracing the Past - Sai Gon (3 hours)
Travel back into Sai Gon’s tumultuous history and get a real flavor of the city as it was during its 1950s and 1960s prime. Taking you to sites rarely visited by tourists, we show you to a different side of the city’s past which will give you an enlightening insight into the Sai Gon of yesterday. Then you will step back into a genuine slice of old Sai Gon as you visit the lovingly restored former residence of US ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, and enjoy a home-cooked meal and chat with its present owner, who has lived in the city through much of its turbulent recent past.
Prayers and Peace - Hue (1 hour)
Vietnam’s former imperial capital is home to hundreds of well-preserved ancient temples and pagodas; there is nowhere better to experience a traditional Buddhist prayer ceremony. Your pagoda visit begins as you make offerings of fruit & flowers to the monks, who will then guide you around their temple and explain their way of life, before conducting a personal prayer ceremony with you. Close your eyes and enjoy a moment of peace and tranquility as you pray for health and happiness, and depart with a special keepsake given to you by the monks, along with a feeling of serenity and wellbeing.
Street Cuisine - Hanoi (3 hours)
The locals all know that the best Vietnamese food is found on the street, so who better to help you sample Hanoi’s best street food than the chairman of the Hanoi Gastronomy Club. He’ll start your culinary journey around the capital with a morning market visit to soak up the sights, sounds and smells, before you head to the atmospheric Old Quarter. This will allow the chance to indulge your senses as you savor the smell of fresh grilled pork while eating bun cha, watch old ladies make spring rolls and listen to the sizzle of pan frying your banh xeo. Your adventure ends at Cha Ca La Vong restaurant, famous for its one and only dish - grilled fish with saffron oil and fresh greens.
Reviving Water Puppetry - Hanoi (3 hours)
The traditional Vietnamese folk art of water puppetry, which dates back to the 10th century, has undergone a revival in recent years, thanks in part to Mr Nghi, an enthusiastic elder from a village near Hanoi who grew up with this art. Your journey begins in the capital and ends with a horse & carriage ride up to the village gates, where Mr Nghi will take you to a puppet-making workshop and explain his passion for this special art form. He and his family will then perform their water puppet show just for you, as they stand chest-deep in the village pond and manipulate their puppets, accompanied by village musicians. When the music sounds through the village, some of the locals both young and old may be enticed to gather around the pond, laughing, clapping hands and adding their own part to this traditional performance.
