Vung Tau, Vietnam is an easy getaway from the noisy and populous city of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In bygone years, Vung Tau was a favorite beach destination for the rich and famous in Ho Chi Minh City. Today Vung Tau stands as a resort town in Baria - Vung Tau, 125 kilometers from Ho Chin Minh City. It is approximately 14 kilometers long and 6 kilometers wide. It houses many bungalows and vacation homes from olden days and many large and modern hotels along its beaches.

There are many Vietnam tourist attractions in Vung Tau. These include beaches and abundance of pagodas and temples, many leaning against the mountains and face the oceans. Vung Tau, Vietnam faces the ocean on three sides. Not surprisingly Vung Tau is windy all year long with a very pleasant average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade which makes it a popular destination for sightseeing in Vietnam.

The three beaches in Vung Tau, Vietnam are Bai Sau or the Rear Beach, Bai Dua or the Pineapple Beach, and Bai Truoc or Front beach.

Bai Sau beach is located in the southeast side of the town and is the most popular beach in Vung Tau. The affluent Saigonese holiday makers are a common sight in this beach on weekends. During the rainy season the sea is calm, but frequent periods of high wind and dry waves during the dry season.

Bai Truoc beach is located between the Nui Lon and Nui Nho mountains and is lined with coconut trees, the beach looks like a crescent moon when seen from far. This is the closest beach from urban Vung Tau, Vietnam and hence is filled with open air restaurants and bars.

Among the pagoda the Thich Ca Phat Dai Pagoda attracts maximum crowd, mostly pilgrims. This is famous for its large and serene environment and its 6.2 meter tall statue of Buddha. The other religious site is Niet Ban Tinh Xa Temple of Nirvana and the Statue of Jesus on top of Nui Nho Mountain.

GETTING AROUND
By taxi
Taxis are rather expensive in Vũng Tàu. Prices are 30% higher than Saigon companies, especially along the beaches. Major companies are Gili Taxi, Petro Taxi and Mai Linh.

By motorbike
As an ordinary Vietnam urban area, Vũng Tàu has plenty of xe ôm (motorbike) drivers who are professional (and unfortunately seek out foreigners). Tourists coming to Vũng Tàu may find out that traffic is slower here, especially during the week. As of December 15th, 2007 all riders in Vietnam are now required to wear helmets an this is strongly enforced. As such, the driver should supply you with a helmet. If he doesn't - find another one, as you'll be the one stuck with the fine. Remember : always agree on a price before you set off.

By double-bike
Xe đạp đôi or double-bike has been popular among youth and teenagers of Vung Tau. You can see groups of at least four riding along the windy and green streets and along the coast. A standard double-bike can carry 3 people in which 2 take the ride. You can rent a double bike at the Bãi Trước (Front Beach) Area beside Nhà thiếu nhi (Children Cultural House) or on pavements along the Bãi Sau (Back Beach) near hotels area.

Walking
Vũng Tàu is rather small in size, so don't hesitate to take a walk. Recommended ways are : Bacu street (the city's downtown), Đồ Chiểu Street (food center), Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị Square, Công viên Bãi trước (Front Beach park) and pavements along the coastline. The only drawback; foreigners are constantly sought after by motorbike drivers, especially if walking alone.
WHAT TO SEE ?
Vung Tau is an old port, and the first Vietnamese area to be visited by local vacationers. It is located on a 110 sq.km area, 125 km south-east of Ho Chi Minh city. With an average temperature of 28oC and 20 km of beautiful coastline, it's no wonder that it's a popular spot. Vung Tau have five beaches scattered over the peninsula.

Bai Truoc - Front Beach
Bai Truoc is also known as Bai Tam Duong. Tam Duong means "searching for the sun". The beach is located between Nui Lon mountain and Nui Nho mountain.

From afar, the beach is shaped like a crescent moon, and along the beach, there are many coconut trees. Not a clean beach for swimming, it has many kiosks, open-air restaurants and bars and it is the beach closest to urban Vung Tau.

Bai Sau - Rear Beach
Bai Sau is also known as Bai Thuy Van. This stretch of beach is located in the southeast side of town and is about 10 km in length from the base of Nui Nho. The most popular beach in Vung Tau, it is packed with Saigonese every weekend during the summer months. Teenagers arrive on scooters (3 hrs travel), locals by mini-van or bus (2 hrs) and affluent tourists by hydro-foil boats (1 ½ hr). The sea is calm during the rainy season but there are frequent periods of high winds and big waves during the dry season. Strong undertow currents make swimming dangerous in some spots.

Bai Dua - Pineapple Beach
Historically known for its wild pineapple trees and black rocks, Bai Dua is located at the foot of Nui Nho Mountain. It is the smallest of the four major beaches in Vung Tau but very popular for its calm waters and its majestic sunset. Bai Dua is also known as Huong Phuong beach. Visitors come to this rocky cove for its tranquility and cleanliness.

Paradise Beach
In 1994, a taiwanese conglomerate paid a large sum of money to the vietnamese government for the right to build a theme park with private beach on the northern end of Bai Sau.

This beach, not too aptly named Paradise Beach, is open to the public but requires an entrance fee. Everything here costs twice as much as at the other beaches. It is populated mostly with group tourists from other Asian countries.
