Ho Chi Minh, with more than 8 million inhabitants, is the country’s commercial center. Despite the well documented hustle and bustle, the city retains its connections to the past. Embark on a walking tour to admire Ho Chi Minh’s historic landmarks including a stroll down Rue Catinat of Graham Greene's 'The Quiet American', which reveals several colonial classics; the Opera House, a three-story classical theatre built to entertain the French colonists (outdoor visit); the former Hotel de Ville constructed for the French bureaucrats of Indochina in 1901, now The People's Committee building with no public access; the Notre Dame Cathedral, a stunningly massive red-brick edifice with twin spires, a clear reminder that French once ruled this city (open only 3-4pm every day, otherwise just an outdoor visit); the Central Post Office influenced by Renaissance architecture; and the former Presidential Palace, headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh Government during the American war. If time permits, drive 6km to another district to visit Thien Hau temple, built by the Cantonese congregation in the early 19th century. It was built to honor the goddess of the sea and protect local fishermen. The temple’s interior courtyard is worth seeing with beautiful ceramic figurines and antiques shrouded in incense-smoke. It is always bustling here with worshippers from the local Chinese community. Take the opportunity to write out your wishes on a small red note, stick it on an incense coil and pray for your wishes come true. Overnight at hotel in Ho Chi Minh city.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
Our day will begin with a visit to Tay Ninh, the centre of Caodaism, a local sect of Buddhism founded by a Vietnamese countryman in early 20th century. Arriving at noontime, you will have the chance to join the daily solemn ceremony at the temple of Cao Dai called Tay Ninh Holysee. On the way back to Ho Chi Minh, we can stop to visit Cu Chi tunnels, one of the few remaining monuments to the fierce Vietnam War. We can even crawl a part of the tunnel to experience the real life of the Vietnamese guerrillas, who used to use and live inside this system during the wartime. Return to Ho Chi Minh late afternoon. Lunch in Tay Ninh or en route. Dinner by your own arrangement. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
We will leave Ho Chi Minh for Dalat today by a midday flight VN1382 (14h10 - 15h00). The jewel of Vietnam Central Highlands, Dalat is featured by a park-like environment, with lovely temperature 15°-24°C and sunlight all year round which make the city a haunt of honeymoon couples. Upon arrival, you will be greeted at the airport and we will soon visit to the Summer Palace of Bao Dai, the last King of Vietnam, Tuyen Lam Reservoir, Truc Lam grandiose temple and Dalat Flower Garden. Take a horsecart round the hilly roads of Dalat to its graceful Xuan Huong Lake. Lunch at local restaurant. Overnight at hotel in Dalat.

The landway from Dalat to Nha Trang (more than 200km) is very sightworthy and photogenic with pinewoods, waterfalls, farms of tea and coffee, and “Picturesque” mountain pass (“Bellevue Pass” as named by the French early 20th century!). The South of Central Vietnam, with Highway 1 as a backbone, suffers warm and dry weather, arid and sandy land, though, has so many treats for our eyes: the ruins of Cham Nation visible from the roads, coastline with blue lagoons and odd-shaped rocks, plages with crystal water and boundless sand-dunes, farms of tasty fruits and industrial crops for domestic use and export (dragon fruit and grape, coffee, tea, and pepper), and historical sites from the last warfare in Vietnam, the American War. From Nha Trang we drive to Quang Ngai via Quy Nhon, visiting fishing villages with colourful boats and hospitable fishermen, passing high mountain passes with nice-looking scenery and stop for a rest at Dai Lanh beach. Lunch in Quy Nhon. Lots of Cham ruins are in the neighborhood of this city and are easily reachable. After visiting Binh Dinh Museum and a Cham Tower in Quy Nhon, we will arrive in Quang Ngai, a convenient stopover on our long Southern Central Vietnam ride. Remarkable international demonstrations had been ridden after this event, contributing to the end of the American War. After lunchtime, we can hike around, following the mountain people to their villages for a visit, or take our car heading to further hamlets in Ban Pho, Trieu Cai, or Na Hoi. If we meet Coc Ly (the market on Tues) not in high water season, we can take a boat trip along Chay River, enjoying marvelous limestone range along the river and drop off to visit a big cave or a village of H’Mong or Dzay people.
